loved this! never been much into fashion myself because as a child i thought that wasn’t something for me, but growing up i began to get more and more interested in it. loved how you also talked about the difficulty to be sustainable in a capitalist world
i’m curious what sparked your interest in fashion! and yeah late-stage capitalism is a beast… sometimes it feels like so much of what we get to enjoy/do as a hobby comes with tradeoffs and difficult decisions, but maybe we’re conditioned to feel guilt as individuals so we don’t hold corporations/institutions responsible 🫠
mostly seeing people dressing cool online and wanting to be as cool as them!! and yes, i completely agree, we can try to be sustainable as much as we can, doing our best, but there are many things out of our control because in the corporations’ hands
I really enjoyed reading this—I had a very similar experience of deciding I wanted to understand fashion and dress better, and ended up falling in love with fashion as an art form and industry and community of writers. But it’s a complicated love, as you point out!—it’s often expensive and environmentally damaging. But it’s very hard to let go of the very pure joy I experience when seeing beautiful clothes and putting together an outfit. Thanks for this lovely read 💌
thank you for the kind words! would love to hear more of your thoughts on fashion and how your love started ☺️
i kind of appreciate that this fashion is so complicated – clothing has moved the world for millennia (for better or for worse), and i don’t think there’s any other art form that serves as both a basic necessity and self-expression at its finest (except maybe food).
“I started this newsletter partly because I wanted to write about what makes me happy, which includes fashion.” LOVE! also spot on about fashion playing multiple roles, i distinctly remember as a kid the exact t-shirt i would wear whenever i had to attend lessons i hated or do things i disliked 🤣
